The Dubuque Youth Symphony and Symphony orchestras’ 2008 Concerto Competition is open to students in grades 8-12 who live within a 75-mile radius of Dubuque.

Completed applications are due Friday, Feb. 29, at the Dubuque Symphony Office, 2728 Asbury Road.

The Concerto Competition will be at 8 a.m., Saturday, March 8, at Jansen Music Hall, Clarke College.

A panel of judges, including William Intriligator, music director and conductor of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, will evaluate performances. One participant might be selected to perform as a soloist at an upcoming Dubuque Symphony Orchestra or Dubuque Youth Symphony Orchestra performance.

Greg Orwoll, executive director of the Colts Youth Organization, was elected to the nine-member board of directors of Drum Corps International during annual meetings in Orlando, Fla., recently.

Drum Corps International will operate 115 competitions this summer for nearly 50 corps. The organization has an operating budget of more than $10 million. Competition finals are scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 7-9, in Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis. It will be the first event in the new home of the Indianapolis Colts.

The Dubuque Area Writers Guild will publish “Celebrating the Art and Ethos of Dubuque,” in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Dubuque Fest, May 16-18.

Both experienced and previously unpublished writers are invited to participate, as well as participants who wish to share their oral histories through an interview process. The interviews will be transcribed and excerpts published in the anthology.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneer Players will present “Glengarry Glen Ross” Friday through Sunday, under the direction of UW-P theater professor, Ann Farrelly.

This 1984 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play by David Mamet centers around two days in the lives of four Chicago real estate agents who push the boundaries of ethics and morality.
